Craig is now forever part of the Pacific Ocean. On March 12, 2022, Southampton College fellow alums Aaron Kurtzman, Rich Muller, Karen Kroslowitz and friend Sarah Alexander spread some of Craig’s ashes in Point Lobos State Park, Carmel, CA. Over Thanksgiving Weekend 1994, we’d spent a day hiking there so it seemed like the perfect place to regather, talk story and remember Craig. The guys had been housemates (Karen an honorary one) over many years back then, so the memories of Craig’s penchant for reading, or that one New Year’s Eve when we feasted on lobster, or how the food at dinner always seemed to migrate to his end of the table, or the baseball game where vegetarian Craig infamously scarfed a hot dog (and totally regretted it) all came back. As long as those shared memories are shared once again, they live on and so do the people our hearts hold dear. If you find yourself in that neck of the spectacularly beautiful Monterey Bay as it meets the Pacific Ocean, take the South Shire Trail to The Slot (36 deg 30’50”N 121 deg 56’51”W) to where tidepools and Craig’s beloved mariculture (mussels in this case) abound.

Yes - Thank you! Craig really needed some representation in the Pacific Ocean. He's got some in the Atlantic off NC outer Banks and Core Sound too. Just North of here, as he was coming through Ocracoke Inlet in the dark on a lone venture, Craig swamped the wooden kayak he built. Fortunately, it was warm and he didn't suffer any hypothermia, as he did in one winter's "swamping" adventure in the Everglades. Craig was never constrained by the generally accepted role of a boat in keeping you out of the water!
And thank you Karen and Rich, so much for all your help in retrieving Craig's possessions!
